Southern Ireland’s childcare crisis looks set to continue as more and more parents opt to return to work. Most crèches have long waiting lists, and are also faced with staffing problems as many child minders take work in better paid sectors of the economy. Childcare costs are high, and are currently not subsidised by the State.
Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to find good childcare, and know what you’re looking for. Take the time to find out what to look for and learn how to spot potential problems.
When you’ve drawn up a list of places you want to visit, go during working hours and observe the environment and interactions between the staff and children. Prepare questions in advance about hours, arrangements to do with food and any other concerns you have. Before you engage anyone to look after your child take references, or investigate their track record.
