At around 16 weeks of pregnancy, the word ‘kick’ isn’t really the right word to describe the first foetal movements most women feel. A fluttering or twitching sensation is closer to the mark.
So try not to be too concerned if you can’t detect any kicking movements at this stage. Your midwife or doctor will check that your baby has a strong heartbeat and that everything is developing normally. As a general rule – the sign of a healthy baby is an active baby.
It’s only once you’ve reached 28 weeks, that you’ll need to pay more attention to the way your baby moves. Near the end of your 3rd trimester you might be asked to count how many movements you can feel for a specified length of time each day.
