Great tips for helping your pregnant partner

When your partner becomes pregnant various tasks become really uncomfortable, or can even cause sickness. So here are some great tips to guide you in helping your partner to stay as comfortable and happy as possible during pregnancy:

Spoil your partner

Go out on dates

Spend time as a couple now doing things you enjoy. Go out for dinner or to the cinema, or just for a romantic stroll.

Massages

Giving a hand or foot massage can help relieve a lot of tension. Be aware that any massage product with lavender oil should be avoided, as it’s too strong for pregnant women to use on their skin.

Encourage her to get pampered

Treating your partner to manicures, pedicures, haircuts and facials are all wonderful ways to help her feel as relaxed and attractive as possible.

Encourage your partner to take naps

Becoming pregnant is an enormous change for the body, and in the first trimester most women will feel more tired than usual. So encourage your partner to take naps and to lie in on weekends. As a special treat, wake your partner up with breakfast in bed.

Go on holiday

If you can afford to, now could be a good time to go on holiday. You’ll get to relax and enjoy yourselves before the birth, and you can still go abroad if you want to – from 35 weeks pregnant women are not allowed to fly.

Buy flowers or other gifts

Buy your partner gifts such as bubble bath, chocolates or flowers. But be aware that strong smells and flavours can trigger nausea at this time. So choose subtle scents like carnations instead of lilies, delicately scented beauty products, and chocolates that aren’t too rich.

Be a part of what’s happening

Medical check-ups

Attend all the doctors appointments you possibly can. If you have trouble getting away, be sure to make it to the big ones like the first heartbeat and the ultrasounds.

Go to childbirth classes together

Classes will help you to feel really prepared, and to know what to expect when she’s in labour. It also gives you a chance to work out together what’s going to happen, and to get closer because of it. Ask questions and share worries – it’s your opportunity to set your mind at rest.

Wait to feel the baby kick

Ask if you can put your hand on her bump, and leave it there for some time. The longer you leave it there, the more likely you are to be rewarded by feeling bumps and flutters.

Read a book

Find a good book to help you prepare for what to expect. Your partner will be pleased to see that you’re so interested, and you will probably learn things that will help to minimise any fears or worries.

Practical help

Fill up the car with petrol

The fumes at the petrol pump can make pregnant women feel sick, and they’re not good for either her or the baby. This is something that’s really easy for you to do and that will really mean a lot.

Keep the home running smoothly

Managing your time and the household effectively will really help to allow your partner to relax. This includes doing a bit of extra work on the usual things like making sure the bills are paid, cooking meals, shopping and cleaning. If you have other children, make sure that she’s not always the one looking after them.
