Folic acid: The most crucial nutrient during pregnancy

Folic acid is an essential nutrient for a healthy pregnancy. Folic acid helps prevent neural tube defects e.g. spina bifida. The Department of Health recommends that you take a supplement containing 400µg folic acid every day.

If you haven’t already, start taking a daily folic acid supplement of the recommended 400µg such as the Aptamil Pregnancy & Breastfeeding supplement which also contains the added benefit of key nutrients such as vitamin D (essential for calcium absorption and healthy bones) and Omega 3.

Talk to your GP if there is a family history of neural tube defects (e.g. spina bifida) or if you are taking medication for epilepsy, as you may require a higher dose.
