What does the Department of Health and Children say about introducing solid feeds?

The Department of Health and Children and the World Health Organisation recommend exclusive breastfeeding of infants for the first six months of life, and thereafter to combine breastfeeds with nourishing spoon-feeds and finger foods until the age of two.

If you cannot or choose not to breastfeed, the Department of Health and Children recommend formula milk as the next best substitute for breastmilk. Spoon-feeds can be introduced to your baby’s diet at 4-6 months if you have chosen to formula feed your baby. Early introduction of spoon-feeds (before 17-18 weeks) is not recommended.
