Going back to work: Dealing with feelings of guilt

Working mums aren’t ‘bad mothers’

If you do choose to go back to work, the first day you leave your child with a childminder may be very difficult. It can be extremely stressful and emotional for both mother and child, and you may experience strong feelings of guilt.

It’s important to remember that you are not a bad mother; you’re actually doing all you can to make the best life for your child.

Practical ways of limiting guilty feelings

The most important thing to do is find the right childminder – once you know your child is in safe, caring hands, your anxieties will be soothed.

Start things slowly, and begin childminding before your job starts. Think about leaving your child for just part of the day at the outset, to help her get used to her new environment – and understand that you will be coming back. This will also help to reduce stress for you both by separating your first day back at work from her first day with her childminder.

Your choice for every stage of growth.
